Denier sur un flan un peu court, mais avec une frappe relativement bien centrée au droit comme au revers. Métal avec un bon aspect et une agréable patine grise, finement irisée avec des nuances verdâtres au revers et sur la tranche à cause d’une conservation en classeur plastique

Comentario

Le centrage de ce denier, avec les légendes largement hors flan ne permet pas de restituer le nom du monétaire, écrit au droit autour de la croix à six branches. Au revers, dans le premier canton, nous aurions AC au lieu de CA pour CA-BL-ON-NO (parmi tant d’autres façon d’écrire et de compartimenter CABILONNO). Au revers on remarque une cassure de coin dans le second canton.
Tous ces deniers dérivent du bronze TEVDEBERTE / CA-BI-LON-NV (cf. Ponton d'Amécourt, pl. VI, n° 132) attribué à Théodebert Ier. La croix à six branches est considérée par certains comme étant un chrisme. Les deniers de Chalon sont classés selon le nom inscrit au droit ; BADOINVS, MVMMOLVS, MAROL, BIL...INVS, ABBO, NERTVNVS, INPORTVNVS ou BOBO. Mis à part cette inscription du droit, l'évolution de l'épigraphie CABILONNO, au revers, permet de proposer une datation relative. La chronologie proposée par Ponton d'Amécourt est la suivante ; CA BI LON NV, CA BIL ON NO, CA BL ON NO, puis enfin CA BLO NN O+.
Sur notre denier, la légende (largement hors flan) peut difficilement être restituée.
The centering of this denier, with the legends largely off-flank, does not allow us to restore the name of the mint, written on the obverse around the six-pointed cross. On the reverse, in the first canton, we would have AC instead of CA for CA-BL-ON-NO (among many other ways of writing and compartmentalizing CABILONNO). On the reverse, we notice a die break in the second canton. All these deniers derive from the bronze TEVDEBERTE / CA-BI-LON-NV (cf. Ponton d'Amécourt, pl. VI, n° 132) attributed to Théodebert I. The six-pointed cross is considered by some to be a chrism. The deniers of Chalon are classified according to the name inscribed on the obverse; BADOINVS, MVMMOLVS, MAROL, BIL...INVS, ABBO, NERTVNVS, INPORTVNVS or BOBO. Apart from this inscription of the right, the evolution of the epigraphy CABILONNO, on the reverse, allows us to propose a relative dating. The chronology proposed by Ponton d'Amécourt is as follows: CA BI LON NV, CA BIL ON NO, CA BL ON NO, then finally CA BLO NN O+. On our denarius, the legend (largely off-flan) can hardly be restored
