Il est fait mention de cette paroisse dans un testament daté de 1391, par lequel Edouard de Beaujeu lègue à sa femme, la prévauté de Ranchal. D'autre part, le 22 mars 1578, Louis de Gonzague, duc de Nevers, comte d'Auxerre, céda à Claude Rédé les terres d'AMPLEPUIS, RANCHAL, CHEVAGNY-LE-LOMBARD, moyennant le prix de 40000 écus d'or. Par le même traité, il vendit à Jean Arod les terres et seigneureries de MONTMELAS.
Le fief de Montpiney appartint successivement à noble Jean Vaginay commissaire et procureur du roi au présidial de LYON (1660), à Jean- François de Guillermain, écuyer, seigneur de Nuzière; à M. Brac de Montpiney, puis à la famille Gonnet. Du chateau, il ne reste plus aujourd'hui que quelques ruines.
En 1700 Jean Vaginay est seigneur de Montpiney et de Lerondes.
Au XVIIIème siècle, RANCHAL faisait partie de la Chastellenie de THIZY et, comme Cours, possèdait un "chacipol", ce qui était à peu près un "chatelain de la campagne". Avant la révolution, RANCHAL était paroisse dans le Beaujolais, du diocèse de MACON, de l'élection de VILLEFRANCHE, de l'archiprêtré de BEAUJEU. Il ressortissait à la justice de CUBLIZE et de MAGNY. La collation appartenait au prieur de THIZY qui partageait la dîme avec le curé. La dame était la marquise de Vauban.
