Norodom pedí ayuda a Francia contra Annam, Siam y Cochinchina. Un protectorado francés se estableció el 11 de agosto de 1863 (Tratado de París). Norodom murió en 1904. Su muerte dio lugar a una emisión monetaria en 1905..
