De origen sienés, León XIII fue nuncio en Bruselas, obispo de Perugia, luego cardenal desde 1853. Se convirtió en Papa el 20 de febrero de 1878 tras un cónclave que duró sólo dos días. Muy liberal y atento a los cambios de su época, fue un hábil diplomático y restableció relaciones diplomáticas con Alemania, Suiza, Bélgica y Rusia. En el plano social, denunció los excesos del capitalismo y se comprometió a defender a los trabajadores. También sigue siendo quien abrió los archivos del Vaticano a los investigadores..
