Cuando el Congo Belga obtuvo su independencia en 1960, el país se convirtió en la República del Congo. En 1964, pasó a llamarse República Democrática del Congo. Entre 1971 y 1997, el presidente Joseph-Désiré Mobutu abogó por la autenticidad africana y renombró el Congo como República de Zaire (Zaire para abreviar). En 1997, cuando cayó Mobutu, el país retomó el nombre de República Democrática del Congo..
