La Société Centrale Canine (pour l’amélioration des races) a été fondée en 1881, en tant qu’association (loi 1901) à but non lucratif, agréée par le Ministère de l'Agriculture, la Société Centrale Canine a pour objectif la promotion des races de chiens en France, ainsi que la promotion et la protection des divers rôles du chien dans la société.
Une exposition canine (ou concours canin) est avant tout un concours de beauté durant lequel éleveurs et particuliers viennent soumettre leurs chiens de race aux critiques d'un jury.
À l'inverse d'une épreuve de travail qui juge les aptitudes du chien (chien de berger, de chasse, agilité, etc.), l'exposition canine juge les qualités esthétiques d'un chien, et sa conformité au standard de sa race..
