Medal with a yellow and white ribbon and surmounted by a bar. Preserved in a gray case stamped with the papal coat of arms, and lined with brown felt and silk. Diameter of the medal without the bail or ribbon: 34x. A Holy Year or Jubilee is, in the Roman Catholic Church, an ordinary celebration intended to rekindle the faith of Catholics and taking place every 25 years, exceptionally on other occasions. During this year, a plenary indulgence is granted under certain conditions: confession, sacramental communion, almsgiving or other good works, and the pilgrimage to Rome, which includes visiting the major basilicas. These conditions are generally specified in the bull of indiction promulgated by the Pope, which also sets the opening and closing dates of the Holy Year. The Holy Year is therefore a time of conversion, penance, forgiveness, and remission of temporal punishment incurred for sin. It is also, therefore, a year of rejoicing and thanksgiving. During the Holy Year, the Holy Door of each of the four major basilicas of Rome is solemnly opened.
