L’interdiction de la représentation de l’homme et des animaux valorise grandement l’écriture, d’autant plus que le Coran dit explicitement que l’art d’écrire est d’essence divine (sourate 96, verset 4). Les inscriptions ont donc à la fois une fonction de prosélytisme religieux et un rôle esthétique.

AL-ANDALOUS - ABD AL-RAHMAN III
(891-961)
Caliph
Abd Al-Rhaman III, a veces afrancesado en Abderraman III nació en Córdoba el 7 de enero de 891. Es nieto del séptimo emir omeya independiente de Al-Andalus. Nombrado por primera vez Emir de Córdoba el 15 de octubre de 912, fue el primero en emanciparse del poder de Bagdad al asumir el título de califa el 16 de enero de 929. Aunque omeya, tenía ojos azules, rubio y tez clara por su ascendencia cercana, en particular su abuela, Christian, la Infanta Real Onneca Fortunez. Es más conocido por Medina Al-Zahara, el palacio que mandó construir en honor a su esposa Zahra en el año 936 y que empleó a más de 10.000 trabajadores durante 25 años. Desde 2009, este monumento ha sido catalogado como Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. Sus inmensas ruinas se encuentran a 8 kilómetros de Córdoba. Abd Al-Rahman III murió el 15 de octubre de 961 y le sucedió su hijo Al-Hakam II..
