Sa carrière politique commence dans le Massachusetts jusqu’au poste de gouverneur où il se distingue en réprimant la grève de la police de Boston en 1919. Cela le rend populaire et il est donc choisi pour l’investiture pour seconder Warren G. Harding aux élections présidentielles de 1920. Une fois élu, il ne fait pas partie de l’administration Harding. A la mort de Harding en 1923, il lui succède devenant le 30e président des États-Unis d’Amérique. Il poursuit la politique de Harding et est réélu en 1924. Ses années de mandat sont marquées par une forte croissance économique. Sa politique économique est marquée par un laissez-faire intérieur, un allègement de la fiscalité et un protectionnisme douanier. Il tente aussi de restreindre l’immigration. Il est faveur de l’extension des droits civiques aux minorités de couleur mais ses tentatives sont à chaque fois bloquées par la minorité démocrate du Congrès. Sous la présidence, les amérindiens accèdent à la citoyenneté américaine. En 1928, Herbert Hoover, son secrétaire au commerce lui succède.
