The Lódz Ghetto was the first large ghetto established by the Nazis in April 1940 and also the second largest ghetto after Warsaw. The Lódz ghetto was transformed into an important industrial center for supplying the Wehrmacht. Its economic importance allowed it to survive until August 1944, when the remaining population was deported to Auschwitz.
