SAN MARINO
(siglo XIII - actualidad)
La pequeña república de San Marino, al sur de Rimini, es libre desde el siglo XIII. En el siglo XV, se dotó de un Gran Consejo de sesenta miembros reclutados entre la nobleza y la burguesía. En el siglo XIX fue bastión de revolucionarios y se puso bajo la protección del nuevo reino italiano a partir de 1862, que respetó su independencia. Los miembros del Gran Consejo son elegidos por cuatro años por sufragio universal (introducido en 1909); dos de ellos ejercen el poder ejecutivo como capitanes-regentes durante seis meses.
