Il revient à l’école anglaise et aux travaux de P. V. Hill, The Coinage of Septmius Severus and his family of the Mint of Rome A.D. 193-217, Londres 1977, d’avoir reclassé les différentes émissions de l’atelier de Rome, grâce à la théorie des cycles et d’avoir mis en lumière l’organisation de l’atelier de Rome qui travaille en officines et non pas en fonction du métal comme l’avaient décrit les numismates du XIXe siècle. Poids léger.

SEPTIMIO SEVERO

Septimius Severus nació en 146 en Leptis Magna en África (Libia). Después de una brillante carrera militar bajo los reinados de Marc Aurèle y Commodus, fue cónsul sufecto en 185. En el momento de la muerte de Pertinax, era gobernador de la Alta Panonia. Aclamado emperador el 13 de abril de 193, eliminó rápidamente a Dide Julien, su compatriota (28 de junio), y asoció a Albin con el poder como César antes de luchar contra Pescennius Niger en el Este. En 195, ingresó ficticiamente a la familia Antonine al ser adoptado post mortem. Derrota y ejecuta a Níger y lidera una brillante campaña en Arabia. En 197 se deshizo de su último adversario, Albin, que se proclamó augusto. Severo prepara el establecimiento de su dinastía dando el título de Augusta a Julia, su esposa, en 194, de César a Caracalla, en 196, luego de Augusto en 198 cuando Geta, su segundo hijo, se convierte en César. Sévère pasará quince años consolidando las fronteras del Imperio consiguiendo numerosas victorias sobre los partos (197-198), luego en África (207) y finalmente en Bretaña (208-211), donde muere..
