Comentario
Monnayage coulé de forme oblongue et pyramidale avec une section ovale. Il a été fabriqué au début de la deuxième moitié du Ve siècle avant J.-C. Marque de valeur, quatre globules sur la tranche pour 4 onkiai, tetronkion ou trias. Notre exemplaire semble épigraphe au droit avec un K majuscule peut-être précédé d’une autre lettre (A) non visible qui constitueraient alors les initiales de l’ethnique de la cité (AK pour Akragas). Pour ce type, G. Buceti (MSTSG. 53) a recensé vingt-huit exemplaires avec des poids compris entre 10,73 g et 16,61 g.

Mark of value, four globules on the edge for 4 onkiai, tetronkion or trias. Our example seems to be epigraphed on the obverse with a capital K perhaps preceded by another letter (A) not visible which would then constitute the initials of the ethnic group of the city (AK for Akragas). Agrigento fue fundada en el siglo VI a. C. por colonos de Gela. Fue una de las ciudades más bellas y prósperas de la costa sur de Sicilia.. La ciudad estaba a pocos kilómetros del mar en la confluencia de dos ríos, Akragas e Hypsas.. La acuñación parece comenzar alrededor del 550 a.. -VS. bajo el dominio del tirano Phlaris. Terón, tirano de Agrigento, capturó a Himera en el 482 a.. -VS. Este último y Gelón de Siracusa obtuvieron una brillante victoria sobre los cartagineses en Himera en el 480 a.. -VS. quien soltó la soga que Cartago impuso a la isla. Después de la muerte de Theron en 472 a.. -VS. , La democracia fue restaurada. En 413 a.C.. -VS. , Agrigento era bastante favorable a los atenienses contra los siracusanos. La ciudad fue destruida en el 406 a.C.. -VS. , durante la invasión cartaginesa. Sin embargo, fue reconstruido, pero no recuperó su antiguo esplendor.. La ciudad se vio envuelta en el conflicto entre cartagineses y romanos durante los dos primeros púnicos (261-241 a. C.).. -VS. y 221-201 a.C.. -VS. ). Los romanos capturaron Agrigento en el 210 a.C.. -VS. , durante la conquista de Sicilia.
